Compact Discs - My Drug of Choice

Summations

For those of you who don't want to search for reviews, here are the basic blurbs and ratings for recent additions to my collection.  For more detail, check out the New Acquisitions Commentary...

Masterplan - Mk II (AFM) 2007
"The album title reflects the changes in the Masterplan lineup, replacing Jorn Lande with former Riot/Lizards vocalist Mike DiMeo.  Overall the change isn't as dramatic as initially feared.  The effect is like going from Dio-era Rainbow to the JLT-fronted edition of the band.  The material is as strong as ever, and DiMeo is given ample opportunity to show that he is more than an understudy.  Hopefully, they can build momentum from here..."
Overall Rating 90 of 100

Mob Rules - Ethnolution A.D. (SPV) 2006
"The last two albums were quite a growth period for the group.  Unfortunately, the album opens with a mini-concept 6-song 23 minute suite that offers plenty of majesty or power, but little of the energy hinted at in earlier work.  The remainder of the album is above average, though little has caught after several listens."
Overall Rating - 75 of 100

Eric Matthews - Six Kinds of Passion Looking for an Exit (Empyrean) 2005
"After a long absence, ork-pop alt-crooner Eric Matthews returns with a mini-LP of dark, mellow, and fully realized songs.  Though the avoidance of computers in the music making may be noble, the overall quality or texture isn't easy to notice in my stereo or car.  Still, another nice addition to the post-midnight listening queue."
Overall Rating 84 of 100

Grave Digger - Liberty or Death (Locomotive) 2006
"It's hard to believe that Grave Digger has been an active entity for more than 20 years.  Though like Running Wild and Saxon, the consistency of their work and the ability to recast old ideas into new light has been the key to their survival.   The record sits comfortably in the middle of their canon, though I hesitate to recommend it as a starting point for the band."
Overall Rating 78 of 100

Jorn - Unlocking the Past (Frontiers) 2007
"Another record of covers as Lande reaches deep to put on his best impressions of David Coverdale and Ronnie James Dio.  If you like tributes and influence records, then you'll find plenty to like here.  However, I was hoping Jorn had some new songs of his own to present instead."
Overall Rating - 70 of 100

Michael Kiske - Kiske (Frontiers) 2006
"This is not the Kiske we know and love from the Place Vendome or Helloween albums, but a gentler mellower edition.  This album is primarily acoustic and adult pop in its direction.  Though I will admit that Kiske's voice is versatile enough to not be a weakness in this area.  "Hearts are Free" is the highlight, and could've been a great single in America."
Overall Rating 68 of 100

Angra - Aurora Consurgens (SPV/Steamhammer) 2006
"Another document providing evidence that the band is among the genre's finest, and damning evidence against the US Music Industry.  One listen to "Passing By" is a firm reminder that great music is still made and available if you have the time and energy to research it.  Recommended"
Overall Rating : 91 of 100

Midnight Oil - The Real Thing (Columbia Australia) 2000
"When a band with this much electricity meets the requirements of Mtv's UNPLUGGED, something's gotta give.  Still, there is much worth exploring, and this is a great testament to the band's strength as live performers."
Overall Rating : 75 of 100.

Trey Anastasio - Bar 17 (Rubber Jungle) 2006
"I loved SHINE, and this is a bit of a letdown in comparison.  Still, I admire the vast background and abilities in music he is able to cover; and when all is said and done this will likely be part of my year end lists, despite smelling a little phish-ier than its predecessor."
Overall Rating : 88 of 100.

Leverage - Tides (Playground/Elements) 2006
"This alternate release features Brother Fire Tribe vocalist, Pekka Heino, but goes for a far more substantial hard rock sound.  This compares favorably to bands like Masterplan, Dreamscape, and Angra."
Overall Rating : 81 of 100

Peter White - Playing Favorites (Columbia/Legacy) 2006
"White has recorded some nice guitar instrumental pop throughout his career, and I have several of his albums.  I generally listen to this style of music for relaxation, but that goal is disrupted by all of the vocal versions here.  If I wanted vocals, wouldn't I have gone to the originals?!  The more appropriate title might be PLAYING BANQUET HALL COVERS."
Overall Rating : 25 of 100

Butch Walker - The Rise & Fall of Butch Walker & the Let's Go Out Tonites (Epic/Red Ink) 2006
"I'm impressed with Walker's meld of rock attitude and pop craftsmanship, though his solo work has yet to match the energy of previous project, Marvelous 3.  This one tries out a few rags from Bowie's closet.  As can be expected, style triumphs over substance."
Overall Rating : 70 of 100

Ty Tabor - Rock Garden (Inside Out/SPV) 2006
"Tabor's album is a little like a diet version of King's X, though these songs could have used a little more time to come together (in terms of arrangement) and the input of his bandmates.  Still it is better than not getting to hear 'em at all."
Overall Rating : 82 of 100

Lovechild - Soul Collector (Escape Music) 2006
"This is more traditional hard rock fare than I normally get into.  The vocals and songwriting seem a little underdone, but overall I imagine Krokus wishes they had issued this album instead of HELLRAISER."
Overall Rating : 55 of 100.

Pat DiNizio - This Is Pat DiNizio (Fuel) 2006
"The voice of the Smithereens takes another stab towards his jazzier tastes.  These piano/vocal arrangements are very sparse, and limited.  Though I was particularly charmed by the covers of "You Only Live Twice" and "Our Town" as well as the two bonus Smithereens' tunes at the end of the disc.  Not for everyone, but rewards with multiple listens."
Overall Rating : 68 of 100.

Skid Row - Revolutions Per Minute (SPV/Steamhammer) 2006
"The grunge movement killed them, and post-grunge view them ironically.  The truth (and shame) is that there is always room for good rock'n'roll with sleazy punk and metal influence.  If only we listened with our ears instead of our eyes and our preconceptions..."
Overall Rating - 87 of 100

Blowoff - Blowoff (FFM/Red Eye) 2006
"Bob Mould is one of the most determined musicians out there, as he continues to force-feed a techno/disco influence into his razor-guitar singer/songwriter persona.  I like it best when the guitars are chiming and the humor is nasty.  Partner-in-crime Richard Morel is up to the task as a foil; but this isn't your parents' Sugar or Husker Du."
Overall Rating - 65 of 100

Talisman - 7 (Frontiers) 2006
"There is plenty of evidence that the Soto/Jacob magic exists.  Unfortunately, this mid-tempo affair could use a touch more energy and a good kick in the butt to remove any shadow of doubt."
Overall Rating - 79 of 100

Winger - IV (Frontiers) 2006
"It is great to have Kip Winger and Reb Beach working together again.  Unfortunately, most of this record spends so much time trying to establish artistry, that it forgets to entertain."
Overall Rating 75 of 100

Trouble - Psalm 9 (Escapi) 2006/1983
Trouble - The Skull (Escapi) 2006/1984
"These are nicely done remasters of the the band's first two albums.  Each album includes a bonus live dvd.  Trouble is now seen as a prototype for the doom/stoner rock sound, but their sound owes a huge debt to Black Sabbath, and a coincidental one to early Savatage.  For the eBay price of one of these discs you can get both albums and the bonus dvd and deluxe packaging."
Overall Grade - 82 and 75 of 100 respectively.

Shogun - 31 Days - (Rock-It) 2006/1987
"In his first album away from Tokyo Blade, Alan Marsh goes for a more accessible hard rock sound.  It is hopelessly dated these days, and there is a slight 'been there-done that' feel to a couple of these numbers.  It still is a fine reminder of what hard rock used to be."
Overall Grade - 78 of 100

Krokus - Hellraiser (AFM) 2006
"Despite the involvement of gifted producer/bassist Dennis Ward, HELLRAISER is a fairly average album.  Vocalist Marc Storace still has most of his voice, and the songs are nice enough.  It just feels like I've heard this done before, and a lot better."
Overall Grade - 42 of 100

Hammerfall - Threshold (Nuclear Blast) 2006
"Not a bad effort, but too many tracks are lingering at mid-tempo range, and the whole affair could have benefitted from a little extra energy.  Very much the child of bands like Accept and Manowar, and the family resemblance is more than uncanny..."
Overall Grade - 72 of 100

Aerosmith - Devil's Got a New Disguise (Sony/Geffen) 2006
"Two new studio cuts and yet another best-of collection.  This one boasts highlights from both labels, a first for the band.  However, only the die-hards and completists will want and have to have the new songs; while the casual fan can have more complete retrospectives from the band's tenure at each label for only a couple of dollars more.  This is Aerosmith's answer to Kiss's SMASHES, THRASHES, AND HITS."
Overall Grade - 50 of 100

Seal - Live in Paris [Deluxe Edition] (Warner Bros.) 2005
"This cd/dvd combo is a well-recorded, well-executed survey of Seal's best material.  This lacks any real surprises or oddities, and isn't that the best part of taking in a live performance either in person or via record?"
Overall Grade 65 of 100.

Sunstorm - Sunstorm (Frontiers) 2006
"Joe Lynn Turner gets the starring role on this Dennis Ward production.  While the album is well executed, the songs are memorable, and Turner's voice is in great form; there are far too many ballads and slower songs for this to build momentum.  I really like it, but would've liked to hear the kind of push Ward gave Michael Kiske on the PLACE VENDOME album."
Overall Grade - 83 of 100.

Blind Guardian - A Twist in the Myth (Nuclear Blast) 2006
"Another entry into the Blind Guardian catalog, a couple of listens have left little memorable thus far.  Still it is more of an issue on my personal readiness than on the possibility of an artistic drop-off by the band.  This one is probably a grower."
Overall Grade - 75 of 100.

Tommy Bolin - Whips and Roses II (SPV) 2006
"There is plenty of material available for this second foray into updating/upgrading Tommy's stuff.  Unfortunately, the package uses Tommy's art to show the 'creativity' of the stewards, as they mangle the vocal track to "Lotus" and add an annoying sound effect to "The Grind".  Way to serve the legacy, guys! (sarcasm!)"
Overall Grade - 26 of 100

Tsunami - Tsunami (Mosh-it-Up) 2006/1983
"Finally, a long-lost favorite comes to cd (r?).  I loved this record as a 13 year old rocker, and I couldn't be happier as I can now access it whenever I want.  In truth, it is great out of nostalgia, not out of accomplishment."
Overall Grade - 80 of 100.

R.E.M. - And I Feel Fine - The IRS Years [Deluxe Edition] (EMI/Capitol) 2006
"The hits disc reminds you of the potential for greatness.  Something the band still seems to carry despite having only a couple of highlights during their Warner Bros. years.  The rarities disc is necessary but a little disappointing.  The live tracks aren't a bad addition, but the "hardcore" fan this set aims at has most of these things already."
Overall Grade - 58 of 100

Audioslave - Revelations (Epic/Interscope) 2006
"Chris Cornell is too prolific for his own good.  The world wasn't ready for another record.  Despite the talent within the group, it has yet to rise above either of the martyred groups that gave this one birth."
Overall Grade - 50 of 100

Stevie Wonder - A Time To Love (Motown) 2005
"There are moments of brilliance as well as moments of passing.  The best moments here have small connections to his earlier work.  Overall, the album may have had a greater impact with some pruning/editing."  Overall Grade - 75 of 100.

Iron Maiden - A Matter of Life and Death (Sanctuary) 2006
"The band is lockstep into mid-tempo fare, and the lack of energy sinks the record.  Still, new Maiden outshines most modern music, so it is better than nothing."
Overall Grade - 80 of 100.

Motorhead - Kiss of Death (Sanctuary) 2006
"Consistency is the most apt description I can give of this legendary trio.  The band still has the fire and energy to keep up with bands half its age.  Long live Motorhead!"
Overall Grade - 82 of 100.

Leatherwolf - World Asylum (Leatherwolf) 2006
"New vocalist Wade Black provides a kick in the pants for this long underrated and appreciated band.  Leatherwolf have finally taken the safety off and increased the intensity.  If you like it fast, hard, and heavy, then you need to check this out."
Overall Grade - 87 of 100

Moonstone Project - Time to Take a Stand (Majestic Rock) 2006
"Guitarist Matt Filippini and a cast of vocalists create a perfect 'classic rock radio' record for an alternate universe.  Well done and well executed, particularly tracks featuring Graham Bonnet, Glenn Hughes, and Eric Bloom."
Overall Grade - 85 of 100

95 of 100 - CLASSIC
85 to 95 - EXCELLENT
70 to 85 - VERY GOOD
50 to 70 - SOLID
30 to 50 - NOT SO GOOD
10 to 30 - BAD
0 to 10 - NOT FIT FOR CONSUMPTION

The point value categories are only a guide to my enjoyment of the album.  The number rating is based on an independent compiling of quality ratios, value, number of listens, and comparison to other albums/artists, though is not wholly scientific or mathematical.  The top and bottom categories will likely pertain to less than 3% of all albums reviews, while the majority of recordings will rate at least 50 points or higher.
